Creating Multidimensional Experiences

29 July – 16 August 2019 | 6 ECTS

Learn how to create immersive experiences that cross the digital and physical space with multidisciplinary teams of international students

This summer, Aalto Ventures Program and Flow Festival offer a unique summer course, where participants from around the world come together to create multidimensional experiences. During three weeks of magical Finnish summer, you will go from an idea to a prototype, learn by doing, get to know and understand the globally renowned startup culture in Helsinki and visit one of Europe’s most prestigious music and arts festivals, Flow Festival.

About the summer course

The course has three focus areas: understanding the culture and people, learning the methods and tools of creating an experience and building a viable business model around the experience.

In order to create an experience, you must understand the environment. Course participants will get a deep dive into the Aalto University Startup Ecosystem, as they visit venues such as Startup Sauna and Aalto Design Factory and meet with passionate students as well as employees and founders of some of the most innovative companies in the country. Additionally, the participants will visit some iconic locations and events in Finland, such as museums and the state-of-the-art Oodi library, and experience the best Helsinki has to offer during the short but intense Nordic summer.

Creating an experience takes more than lectures. During the course, participants will form groups and get their hands dirty, delving deep into teamwork, design thinking, UX design, business modeling and user research in order to get from an idea into a prototype of an experience. Guided by Jenni Kääriäinen – who now works for Tuska Festival and is the original creator of Slush design guidelines – and AVP teachers, students will use an iterative process where they interview real potential customers and work their way from the original idea to an experience that includes a physical, digital and a social dimension. To truly understand how great experiences are created, students will spend a day at Flow Festival, a trailblazing European music and arts festival held in Helsinki.

No experience is good enough if you can’t sell it. After designing an experience worth experiencing, it needs to be shared with others. With the help of training provided by the course staff, groups will prepare pitches with the mindset of blowing the socks off of potential investors. The course then culminates in a showcase, where the groups will present the prototypes of the experiences they have created to the international audience.

About Flow Festival

Flow, the truly urban boutique city festival has been organised in Helsinki annually since 2004. The festival was born out of the founders’ passion for culture. In 15 years, Flow Festival has grown from a small club event to the trailblazing European music and arts festival it is today.

While the scale and breadth of Flow has changed throughout the years – more artists, more people, more everything – the founders’ original vision still stands every year: to create a festival they genuinely want to attend themselves.

Flow Festival is a carefully curated, high-quality festival with an innovative and content driven program that is an inspired mixture of popular culture and experimental arts. With a broad music and arts program, hand-picked food and restaurant services, thoughtfully designed and decorated festival area and an extensive sustainability program Flow has put a new benchmark on the European festival scene.

In 2018, the three-day sold out festival drew a crowd of 84 000 visitors into the monumental former power plant area in the Suvilahti district of Helsinki.

“This is also my first time to work with a real case. It could be hard to imagine you were asked to do a case of such a big company if you were in China. We need to do a lot of researches and interviews to handle this real case in the real market. The results we got from the real market are usually beyond our imaginations and knowledges, and this is exactly the meaning of practice.”

The Innovation University

Aalto University is multidisciplinary innovation university, born from a merger of technical, design and art and business universities in Helsinki. The purpose for Aalto’s existence is to create innovation by bringing business and art together with science and technology.

Entrepreneurship

Innovation and ideas are not valuable by themselves. The execution of an idea is the value created. No matter who you are, where you work and what is your discipline, entrepreneurial skills are needed to pursue idea.

Hands on

Entrepreneurial skills cannot be learned just in a class room. In Aalto Ventures Program, students learn by executing things in practice. Making cold calls, interviewing consumers at the streets, conducting user studies, meeting potential B2B customers, pitching ideas to real investors. For hands on learning, Aalto has optimal environment in Helsinki’s startup ecosystem.

The Ecosystem

Helsinki has the most locally connected startup ecosystem in the World. Meaning new entrepreneurs know on the day 0 more investors and other CEOs than anywhere else in the World. Local connectedness is the cornerstone of our ecosystem where the barrier for help from anyone in any organization and in any position is low and generally people are ready to provide their help.
