Creating Multidimensional Experiences 2020

3 August - 21 August 2020 | 8 ECTS

Learn to create immersive experiences in a multidisciplinary team of international students, working together towards a sustainable future

Aalto Ventures Program offers you a summer course, where participants from around the world come together to create multidimensional experiences. During three weeks of magical Finnish summer, you will go from an idea to a validated sustainable business concept, learn by doing, and get to know and understand the globally renowned startup culture in Helsinki.

About the summer course

The course has four focus areas: understanding the culture and people, learning the methods and tools for creating sustainable experiences with a viable business model, using storytelling and pitching to make your business stand out and doing all this while taking care of one’s own wellbeing.

To create a good experience, one must understand the environment. Course participants will get an in-depth look into the Aalto University Startup Ecosystem, as they visit venues such as Startup Sauna and Aalto Design Factory and meet with passionate students as well as employees and founders of some of the most innovative, sustainability-focused companies in the country. Additionally, the participants will visit some iconic locations and events in Helsinki, such as museums and the state-of-the-art Oodi library, and experience the best Finland has to offer during the short but intense Nordic summer.

A good experience is also a good business. During the course, participants will form groups and get their hands dirty, delving deep into teamwork, entrepreneurship, design thinking, UX design, and business modeling in order to get from an idea into a prototype of an experience. Guided by industry professionals, mentors and AVP teachers, students will use an iterative process where they interview real potential customers and work their way from the original idea to an experience that includes a physical, digital and a social dimension, and is also a viable, sustainable business concept.

No experience is good enough if no one knows about it. Great experiences are not only experienced, but also created together with others. The course will start by student teams coming up with venture ideas that they will work on. With the help of training provided by professional pitching coaches, groups will constantly share ideas about their ventures to the staff and other students, while also preparing for the final pitches to blow the socks off of potential investors and stakeholders. The course then culminates in a showcase, where the groups will present the prototypes of the ventures they have created to the international audience.

The best experiences are the ones created by people who are happy. Making something new is hard work, but working too hard often leads to everyone being worse off. The course takes a firm stand in preventing burnouts, which have become an increasingly common problem among students. In addition to working on their projects, students will also learn about time management and focus on personal wellbeing and social interaction. By the end of the course, students will not only have created a new enjoyable experience, but also gone through one – in a sustainable way and together with new friends.

Aalto Ventures Program

is the entrepreneurship education program at Aalto University. At AVP, students work in multidisciplinary teams, do hands-on exercises and gain tools of mass disruption, ready to be used either to construct a startup or to renovate an existing company from within.  In a world that changes faster every day, the best way to predict the future is to build it yourself. In our experience, the best builders are entrepreneurs and those who think and work like entrepreneurs. People who embark on adventures and boldly go where no-one has gone before. People who do instead of staying home and talking about it.  We teach students to build like an entrepreneur.

“A plethora of new considerations were brought to the table: business models, user experience, ethics, marketing and competition, cultural and social significance. It was intense. Had all my course mates came from a background of engineering, I don’t think I would have learned as much as I did.”

The Innovation University

Aalto University is multidisciplinary innovation university, born from a merger of technical, design and art and business universities in Helsinki. The purpose for Aalto’s existence is to create innovation by bringing business and art together with science and technology.

Entrepreneurship

Innovation and ideas are not valuable by themselves. The execution of an idea is the value created. No matter who you are, where you work and what is your discipline, entrepreneurial skills are needed to pursue idea.

Hands on

Entrepreneurial skills cannot be learned just in a class room. In Aalto Ventures Program, students learn by executing things in practice. Making cold calls, interviewing consumers at the streets, conducting user studies, meeting potential B2B customers, pitching ideas to real investors. For hands on learning, Aalto has optimal environment in Helsinki’s startup ecosystem.

The Ecosystem

Helsinki has the most locally connected startup ecosystem in the World. Meaning new entrepreneurs know on the day 0 more investors and other CEOs than anywhere else in the World. Local connectedness is the cornerstone of our ecosystem where the barrier for help from anyone in any organization and in any position is low and generally people are ready to provide their help.
