Meet the speakers
Juha Salmela
CTO and Co-founder, Spinnova
Born in 1973, Salmela is the CTO and Co-founder of Spinnova. Prior to inventing the method for spinning fibre out of cellulose, physicist Salmela was a team leader of VTT’s (Technical Research Centre of Finland) rheology and process flows team. His main focus was on experimental research of paper making related fibre suspension flows and rheology. Salmela has led several large industrial process development projects in his 18 years with VTT. He was also a visiting scientist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Salmela was chosen as European CTO of the Year in 2018.
Mari Granström
Chief Science Activist & Founder, Origin by Ocean
Mari Granström is the founder of Origin by Ocean, urban activist, passionate environmentalist and organic chemist all in one package. Mari believes in the power of doing rather than talking: If there's a will there is a way. Origin by Ocean develops biorefinery technology based on the marine biomass and address the eutrophication problem of the oceans. Their values lie deep in the oceans and with their actions, they want to bring back the natural balance of the marine ecosystem.
Juha Lipponen
Professor of Practice for Bioproduct Technology, Aalto University
Professor of Practice for Bioproduct Technology, Dr. Juha Lipponen has made a significant and versatile career in industrial development and project management duties, including innovation management and project portfolio responsibilities, and in project management as a technology manager in numerous paper and board machinery delivery projects worldwide. Juha Lipponen's personal inventions have directly resulted in businesses of approximately billion Euros for Valmet/Metso. Juha Lipponen holds approximately 40 patents. Currently, he works as a Professor of Practice at Aalto University, with duties including establishing and leading disruptive research on wood-based materials and products
